How to choose an air hose for a compressor and pneumatic tools
Pressure class, inner diameter, length, oil mist and temperature: what to check when choosing an air hose for a compressor and pneumatic tools.
Which half of the coupling each Camlock type is, what is on its other end, how the types connect, and which sizes and materials are available.

Camlock couplings connect hoses, pipes and tanks quickly: two cam arms on one half pull the other half in and press it against a seal. Each type is named by a letter, and the letter tells you two things: which half of the coupling it is, and what is on its other end. Here is how to tell them apart.
Every Camlock connection has a male adapter — a grooved spigot — and a female coupler with cam arms. Any male adapter connects to any female coupler of the same size, whatever the type letter.
| Type | Half | Other end |
|---|---|---|
| A | male adapter | female BSP thread |
| B | female coupler with cam arms | male BSP thread |
| C | female coupler with cam arms | hose tail |
| D | female coupler with cam arms | female BSP thread |
| E | male adapter | hose tail |
| F | male adapter | male BSP thread |
| DC | dust cap with cam arms | closes a male adapter |
| DP | dust plug | closes a female coupler |
So a hose usually gets type C or type E, while types A, B, D and F connect to threaded pipes, pumps and tanks.

Type A — male adapter × female BSP thread.

Type B — female coupler with cam arms × male BSP thread.

Type C — female coupler with cam arms × hose tail.

Type D — female coupler with cam arms × female BSP thread.

Type E — male adapter × hose tail.

Type F — male adapter × male BSP thread.

Type DC — dust cap with cam arms.

Type DP — dust plug.
Our Camlock couplings come in sizes from 1/2″ to 8″ (ID 13–203 mm) and in four materials: stainless steel AISI 316, aluminium, brass and polypropylene. The exact sizes for each type and material are in the size table on its page. Choose a material that suits the medium. Seals for all types are available on request. See all Camlock couplings.
Send us a photo of the part, or its dimensions and the thread, and we will identify the type and size. We also fit Camlock couplings to hoses: see hose crimping and assembly. Contact us via the contacts page.
