Hoses for edible oils

Edible oils — olive oil, sunflower oil and others — are moved from tankers to storage tanks, between tanks and process lines, and to filling. Oil is a fatty liquid: the hose needs an oil resistant inner tube of food quality, and the pump has to cope with a liquid that is thicker than water. Here is how to choose the hose.

A food quality tube for oils and fats

DELFOOD MILK 10 SD and DELFOOD MILK 10 D are made for milk, dairy products, olive oil and other fatty foods. The inner tube is white, smooth NBR rubber of food quality, odourless and tasteless; the cover is blue NBR rubber.

Suction or delivery only

Where a pump draws oil through the hose, for example when a tanker is unloaded, use DELFOOD MILK 10 SD: it has a steel helix and is rated for vacuum up to 0.9 bar, ID 19–102 mm. Where the hose only works under pressure, DELFOOD MILK 10 D is enough: no helix, ID 19–102 mm. Both work at up to 10 bar.

Viscosity

Oil is thicker than water, and cold oil is thicker still. On the suction side, a hose that is as short as possible and not narrower than the pump inlet helps the pump draw the oil.

Temperature and sterilization

DELFOOD MILK 10 SD and DELFOOD MILK 10 D work from −40 to +80 °C. Oil hotter than +80 °C, such as hot frying oil, is beyond their limits. Steam sterilization is allowed at up to 110 °C for max. 30 minutes.

For fatty foods up to +140 °C there is DELFOOD 10 SD, a multipurpose food suction and delivery hose with a white EPDM inner tube of food quality, ID 19–152 mm, up to 10 bar. It can also be sterilized at up to 110 °C for max. 30 minutes. Frying oil hotter than +140 °C is beyond its limits as well.

Couplings
